DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS REPORT 2016 - INDIA

Posted on 01 Feb 2017

Thanks to our amazing supporters, Mukti Australia was able to work alongside our Indian partner Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission to carry out some incredible development projects in 2016. Our 2016 projects focused on increasing Mukti India's capacity to support and empower disadvantaged and vulnerable children and women, both now and well into the future. We're so looking forward to another year of partnership with the amazing folks at Mukti Mission in India. It is such a privileged to be part of this wonderful and life-changing ministry.

SCHOOL KITCHEN PROJECT

Mukti Mission is now able to provide a nourishing meal to disadvantaged school kids every day.

In 2016, a new kitchen was constructed for Mukti’s Primary School and High School. The previous kitchens were little more than old shacks – with very little space, equipment or ventilation for the kitchen staff. Now Mukti has a lovely new fully fitted-out kitchen where daily meals can be prepared to ensure that rumbling bellies do not interfere with the education of young minds!

CLEAN WATER PROJECT

For the first time in Mukti’s 130 year history, the Mission is producing its own clean drinking water.

In 2016, Mukti’s clean water project continued in earnest. A water treatment plant was installed in Mukti’s farm and is now producing litres upon litres of lovely fresh, clean water for the Mukti’s residents and staff to enjoy. Another water treatment plant was installed near Mukti’s Stuti well and just needs a valve to become operational. A 6000L water tanker was also built to transport the treated water to different locations around the Mission, where small water storage tanks are installed outside the family group homes. A further site has been identified for an additional water treatment module, and this will be installed in 2017.

SOLAR POWER PROJECT

Mukti Mission is now ‘wired for sun’!

In 2016, a 28.8 Kw solar panel system was installed at Mukti under the supervision of Australia technical consultant Iain Johnson, and the Mission is now generating its own sustainable solar power! Groups of students from local technical schools are even coming to Mukti to inspect the setup. The big savings that the Mission is now making on mains power and generator diesel are now being set aside to install more panels and batteries in future years. The big dream is that one day Mukti will be able to go totally ‘off--grid’ with clean, self-generated power, and become an example and shining light to those around them of sustainable living and care of God’s creation.

SANGLI EDUCATION CENTRE

This Centre was a refuge to over 25 young girls growing up in the red light district of Sangli.

In 2016, the Sangli Education Centre expanded to offer 15 more girls a safe place to sleep at night, away from the dangerous environment of the brothels where their mothers work. During the day, the Centre also offers the girls an education and access to medical care. In short, the Centre is all about creating opportunities for the girls so that as they grow older they have a choice about whether to follow their mothers into the sex trade. In 2017 the Centre hopes to expand so that it can offer support to even more girls, and also start some programs for the mothers themselves, such as vocational skills training, self-help groups and small business enterprises, to help create an alternate income to sex work.

The Junior College Second Storey is Open!

Posted on 17 Sep 2015

The opening ceremony and dedication was held earlier this month. The new storey includes two new classrooms, several science laboratories and a library. More than mere bricks and mortar, the second storey means more disadvantaged Indian girls can receive higher levels of education, and “educating girls is a surefire way to raise economic productivity, lower infant and maternal mortality, improve nutritional status and health, reduce poverty, and wipe out HIV/AIDS and other diseases” (Maritza Ascencios from UNICEF). So on behalf of every girls who will in the future sit and learn in the new classrooms, conduct experiments in the new science laboratories, and study in the new library, thank you to every Australian who partnered with us to build the second storey – they now have the opportunity to create a brighter future for themselves and their families.
