Ramabai Mukti Mission Australia |
The founder, Pandita Ramabai (1858-1922), was born to parents of the highest caste of priestly Brahmins in southern India. Raised in this devout Hindu family, Ramabai later earned the title 'Pandita' for her remarkable knowledge of the Hindu holy writings.
After much spiritual struggle Ramabai came to know Christ as Saviour. In 1889, she founded Mukti Mission in response to the plight of young child widows outcast because it was believed they were the cause of their husbands' deaths. 'Mukti' (pronounced like 'book-tea') means freedom, liberation, and salvation in the Marathi language. Pandita Ramabai rescued thousands of child widows, providing a home for them.
Known in India as the Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission, it is located near Pune, in Maharashtra State.
